HISTORICAL STELLENBOSCH & FRANSCHHOEK TOUR
Named after a small wooded Island (Wildebosch) its name was changed in 1687 by Governor van der Stel renaming it Stellenbosch thus becoming the first European settlement in the interior of Southern Africa.
Between 1710 and 1875 3 great fires ravaged and reduced many of the beautiful buildings to ashes. Walking the historical streets one sees many examples of the major building periods from the past and the town breathes an old world atmosphere thanks to its stately oak lined avenues, bordered by babbling water furrows.
Departing Stellenbosch the tour continues over the Helshoogte Pass via Pnieel the old German missionary village on to Franschhoek now famous for its wining, dining and beautiful array of restaurants. Franschhoek (French Glen) was the valley chosen in 1685 by the French Huguenot Settlers to settle in. Easily and clearly visible at the end of the main road is the beautiful French Huguenot Monument which was Inaugurated in 1948. With its simplicity and elegance of line the monument displays a historic French character. Returning to Cape Town via the N1 the scenery in the late afternoon is exquisite.
